SuperSports Round 2

Wakefield Park:  25th May 2019

The Supersports arrived at Wakefield Park to continue the yearlong competition for the NSW State Championship. As usual it would be a one day format with one qualifying session and 3 races. A small field of ten cars came onto the track to claim pole position, what lacked in size made up in quality. Garth Walden set a time in the 57 seconds bracket to edge out Mitchell Neilson for pole position. The second row consisted of Alexander Kenny and Darren Barlow and row three was occupied by Stephen Champion and Peter Clare.

Only nine cars started the first race with John Beck not making the starting lineup. Kenny made a brilliant start from the second row to claim the lead from Walden, Barlow and Neilson. It did not take long for Kenny to build a gap to the second place dice of Walden and Barlow, the latter was putting plenty of pressure on Walden.

Further down the field Chris Berry had a small spin in his Orange PRB S3, he rejoined the field in last position. Champion followed suit, his car spinning at the top of the hill losing plenty of time and positions. By mid race distance Kenny had a commanding lead from the new second positioned driver Barlow. Walden had fallen back and was dicing with Neilson.

The two earlier spinners; Barry and Champion were making their way through the field and passed back markers with relative ease. This was until they reached the car of Ivan Srejber. All three drivers diced meters apart providing one of the best battles of the race. In the end it was Kenny comfortable 1st, Barlow 2nd and Walden 3rd. Barry was the first of the PRB class in 7th outright.

In the second race Kenny made another great start and was followed by Barlow and Walden. The three leaders slowly pulled away from the rest, and as the race settled into a groove most of the field was spread apart. At the rear of the grid there was an exception; Beck who had not started in the first race was negotiating track real estate with John Moyes and Srejber. The two PRB’s seem to have the legs down the straight while Beck had their measure in the tight and twisty sections.

The gap between the top four cars remained static until lap 11, Barlow was coming onto the back straight into the fast right hander when his car pushed him to the left. He had just suffered a slow leaking puncture that destabilized his car. With a few laps left in the race he soldiered on with the imbalanced car with Both Walden and Nielsen capitalizing on Barlow’s misfortune. Kenny won comfortably by a 12 second margin. Walden came home second and Neilsen was 3rd. Barlow soldiered on to finish fourth. Barry was the first of the PRB’s in 7th position.

The final race was held in a setting sun and track conditions would have been colder. Kenny continued his good starting form and took an early lead from Walden and Barlow. Towards the rear of the field, Barry was having a great dice with Beck with both cars passing each other multiple times.

A determined Champion was diving deep under brakes at the last turn when he accidentally collided with Peter Clare, both cars continued racing and no harm was done.  The next lap Champion was trying to make up ground when he spun on the same spot. His car bottomed out on the curb and he could not get traction from his rear wheel.

The safety car came out to stabilize the field. On the restart Kenny continued his march forward while Barlow was harassing Walden for second. Barlow made an aggressive move under brakes at the last turn to overtake Walden. Nielsen was pushing very hard when he also spun losing some vital positions.

In the end Kenny was dominant and won comfortably from Barlow and Walden. Clare came home 4th and Nielsen recovered to a strong 5th. Beck stayed out of trouble for 6th while Barry was again the first of the PRB in 7th.
