SuperSports Round 3

Wakefield Park:  26th May 2018

Perfect early winter weather welcomed the Supersports drivers for the 3rd round of the NSW state championship, unfortunately only a small field of eight cars attended the meet. Barlow wasted no time in setting a time that would be good enough for pole, John Beck was beside him on the front row. The second row consisted of Mitchell Neilson and Stephen Champion.

Barlow made a brilliant start leading the field into turn 1 just ahead of Neilson, the leaders speed was evident and after one lap he was 5.2 seconds ahead lapping considerably faster than the other cars. Peter Hills who had qualified at the rear of the grid also made a good start finding himself mid pack by the end of the first lap and by the third lap he was in second place.

The race settled down into a patter with Barlow leading at the front, Hills was now in a comfortable second position while Neilson and Beck where dicing for third. Beck shadowed Neilson throughout most of the race and was eventually able to get past during the last lap. Hills car started smoking towards the end of the race, he was able to finish, however the car would be ruled out for the rest of the day. The final result was Barlow 1st, Hills 2nd and Beck 3rd.

Only seven cars rolled out for the start of the second race with the omission of Hills. Barlow continued his good starting form getting the jump from his competitors. Neilson and Beck had a slight side to side rub at turn two with the former going slightly wide, this allowed Paul Braico to slip through into second position. Barlow continued his march at the front, behind him the race formed into two groups; Beck, Neilson and Braico diced for second position while Greg Kenny, Champion and Darren Kurzok battled for fifth place.

During the fourth lap Beck spun at turn two stalling his car just on the edge of the track in a dangerous position, the safety car was introduced to control the race as the hard working marshals did their job. Once the field was released the race quickly settled down, drivers spreading out and maintain gaps till the end. The final result was Barlow 1st, Neilson 2nd and Braico a strong 3rd.

Race 3 was run in the setting sun in much cooler condition, Barlow made another of his great getaway building an instant lead from Neilson and Kurzok. The leader was lapping a clear two second quicker that the nearest runner and continued that speed throughout the entire race. Beck joined Kurzok and Neilsen for a three way tussle for the minor placings.

Kenny was not having a happy race with multiple spins that resulted in plenty of time lost, possibly the colder track conditions caught the driver out. Braico and Champion raced in close quarters for most of the race proving that even in a small field there was action no matter what position. Barlow claimed the Trophy by winning the race with a margin of 30 seconds from Neilson. Kurzok edged out Beck to claim 3rd spot.

Barlow’s dominance is impressive with 8 wins in 9 races, and the bad news for his competitors is that is still waiting on a new shipment of tyres.
