2018 R2 Kenny

Cool wet condition greeted the Supersports drivers for the 2nd round of the NSW state championship, a far cry from the high 30’s from the previous round. Fourteen drivers braved the elements to post a time that would eventually set the starting grid. John Beck in the Radical SR3 was the bravest tip toeing through the puddles to post a time good enough for pole, the experienced Chris Sutton also in a Radical was second fasted and tocontinue the norm of the Radicals it was Chris Perini and Stephen Champion on the second row. The surprise was the lowly qualifying of two of the favourites; Alex Kenny in 6th and Darren Barlow in 12th.

The conditions had dried a little by the time race one got started and all the good work that Beck and Sutton did in qualifying to lock out the front row was undone in a blink of an eye. Pole man Beck had a spin at turn two during the first lap, all he could do is watch the rest of the field go by before he found first gear and re-joined at the back. Sutton also had a mishap that resulted into bringing out the safety car.

The race was controlled by the official vehicle for two laps, the recovering Beck was at the back of the queue cars while Sutton was at least half a lap behind trying to catch up and to make things worst both drivers also had a 35 second penalty hanging over their head. Once the safety car released the field it was Kenny that took control and he was closely followed by the hard charging Barlow.

For the following remaining laps Barlow held off a spirited quartet that included; Mitchell Neilson, Rowen Ross, Peter Claire and Chris Perini. These five cars where never more that a few second apart. Up front Kenny slowly pulled away and eventually claimed the race win from Barlow and Perini 3rd.

Kenny was a non-starter for the second race allowing Barlow to take a commanding lead from the start, Perini was the best of the rest holding position from Neilson and Ross. During the third lap Peter Hills went wide at turn one causing his car to have a high-speed excursion in the grass, while travelling through the slippery outfield Hills re-joined a little too fast and locked up the front wheels at the start of turn two nearly causing a second off.

Not long after that the luckless Sutton’s car stopped between turn four and five causing the safety car to come out a second time in as many races. At the restart Barlow continued his march forward, behind him there was a two-way dice for second between Perini and Neilson and another two-way battle for fourth between Ross and Claire. Suddenly Perini started slowing dropping places dramatically, he coasted into the pits only to remerge in last position and that is where he finished

Beck was making his way through the field all the way into third position. At race end it was Barlow 1st, Neilson 2nd and Beck 3rd, unfortunately Beck received a time penalty promoting Ross into 3rd place.

The third and final race was held late Saturday afternoon in poor light conditions, Barlow made an other great start to take an early lead from Hills and Ross. During the jostling for position in the first lap Perini was hit from behind at turn two causing his car to spin, he eventually re-joined albeit in last position. At front Barlow increased his lead from Hills, Ross and Neilson where dicing for third while the mid pack battle between Champion, Clare and Beck was just as intense.

With a few lap remaining Neilson passed Ross for third place, and a little further back Champion’s car was starting to have problems resulting into a DNF. The final result was Barlow 1st, Hills 2nd and Neilson 3rd

Congratulation to Darren Barlow with two 1st places and a 2nd continuing his form from the first round.
