SuperSports Round 1

Sydney Motor Sport Park:  17th March 2018

It was a long wait for the first round of the NSW Motor Race Championship and after a four month break the 1st round was upon us at Sydney Motorsport Park.  Race day would bring temperatures well over 35 degrees as summer would not leave quietly. With such unseasonably high temperatures, driver, cars and tyres would earn their keep in such sweltering conditions. The format for the round was to be Qualifying and 3 races all in one day.  Unfortunately, only ten cars came out in qualifying; this was a little disappointing as most competitors would have had a long period to get themselves organized for the season ahead.

The field consisted of Darren Barlow in a Stohr, Chris Barry driving a PRB S6 Supersports, Jasmine Hills in a SR8 and finally seven drivers in Radical SR3’s. They included; Greg Kenny, Paul Braico, Mark Brame, Stephen Champion, Rowan Ross, John Beck and Mitchell Neilson. Qualifying held on early Saturday morning proved that even though it was a small field most of the cars would be competitive. Seven out of the ten cars were only separated by a mere 2 seconds.  Barlow in the Stohr proved to be quick enough to claim pole with a time of 1:29.7925, beside him on the front row was the radical SR3 of Neilson.

Race 1

The race started cleanly with Barlow and Neilson battling for the lead at turn 2. The two leaders where pursued by Ross, Beck and Hills. Within a few laps the race had settled down and Barlow was pulling away from Neilson who in turn was doing a similar job to the 3rd place battle. Barry in the Orange PRB was having a lonely race at the rear of the field and would eventually be lapped before the end of the race.

Beck vs. Ross was probably the dice of the race, with Beck shadowing the car in for many laps, however he eventually made it through securing a hard fought 3rd place. In the end Barlow won with relative ease while Neilsen drove a clean race to finish 2nd. One notable mention is Hills; qualifying a lowly 9th and arriving home in a strong 5th position.

Race 2

The second race was held in very hot conditions, by the time the cars came out the temperature was around 36 degrees. It was again Barlow in the Stohr who made the best start, even thought he was running on non-preferred tyres (awaiting on a shipment of Avon’s) he was the class of the field.  This time it was Hills turn to keep the leader honest and to her credit she maintained a much closer gap not allowing Barlow to romp away.

Brame, Ross and Neilson had their private battle for 3rd position, cars would be only separated by a few seconds throughout the race. During the sixth lap Champion’s car started slowing down just before turn 2 and eventually he coasted to a halt to retire from the race. Up front Barlow was hitting his marks and driving well within him self eventually taking his 2nd race win in a row. Hills put on a spirited fight for  2nd while Beck arrive home in a solid 3rd.

Race 3

The last race of the day would start in a similar fashion to the previous two, Barlow making the most of the start to build up an early lead from a hard charging Hills.  Beck, Brame, Neilson and Ross would have their own private battle for the final podium position. Unfortunately, Ross luck ran out retiring during the 4th lap.

Hills continued to maintain the pressure on Barlow and was not letting the leader pull away too far, the final result finished as Barlow 1st, Hills 2nd and Brame and edged out Back to claim 3rd.
