SuperSports Round 3

Sydney MotorSport Park,  July 1s

2017 R3 MixingWinter is coming” a phrase from a popular television series and it was fitting for the 5th round of the NSW series. Sydney Motorsport was a chilly 2 degrees early Saturday morning and with a predicted top of 16 degrees for the day, the winter woollies sure did get a work out. The track was in great conditions when the cars came out to qualify.

A healthy field of 21 cars rolled out from marshalling to put on some very fast laps in the pursuit of pole position. The field consisted of 4 different classes and it was the fastest car in class 2 that claimed pole; Darren Barlow in his beautiful Black Stohr WF1 set a time of 1:26.9132 that was not better by any other competitor. Oliver Smith in the SR3Rsx (Class 1) occupied the front row with Barlow. The second row consisted of Nick Kelly in the Radical SR8 (Class 3) and Chris Sutton in another Radical. Third row was occupied by Alex Kelly and Rowan Ross. The fastest PRB (Class 4) was James Dick in 13th position.

The format for the day will be 3 races, the first race to be a standing start while the other 2 rolling start. It was predicted that the Stohr of Barlow would struggle to get off the line due to its smaller clutch and the prediction came true. Barlow was swamped at the start and by the time the cars arrived at the very fast turn one he was behind Nick and Alex Kelly, the latter making a great getaway from 5th on the grid. During the hustle and bustle of the first lap Barlow and Nick Kelly made side to side contact, both cars continued on with Barlow losing some time.

As the cars crossed the line for the first time Alex Kenny had a substantial lead from Nick Kelly and Barlow. Smith and Sutton were in close quarters dicing for 4th just ahead of Mitchell Neilson. As the laps rolled on Barlow and Nick Kelly were slowly gaining ground on the leader and subsequently increasing the gap to the 4th position dice of Smith and Sutton. Back in the pack; John Moyes and James Dick were squabbling for the lead in the PRB class a dice that would last the entire race.

All the drivers were pushing hard, none more than Stephen Champion pushing the adhesion limits of the car culminating into a harmless spin. With only one lap to go the gap that Alex Kenny had built up was virtually gone, Nick Kelly and Barlow were right on his tail. In the end Alex Kelly just prevailed from Barlow who managed to get past N Kelly with only a few corners to go. Smith Finished 4th while Sutton was 5th. The leading class 4 car was Dick in 13th position.

Race 2 was to be a rolling start, more suited to Barlow’s machine…….and it showed. This time he was able to launch away and claim the lead from the start of the race. Alex Kenny followed Barlow in second position while N Kelly was also in close proximity.  Barlow was slowly pulling away from the 2nd positioned car lap after lap. Alex Kenny was starting to drive more defensively trying to keep Nick Kelly behind, while just behind them Sutton and Smith continued their battle as per the first race.

This battle between Sutton and Smith intensified when these two cars came together in the back straight. Smith continued on while Sutton re-joined in 13th position. Moyes was again dicing with Dick for class 4 honours when he unfortunately retired, the only DNF of the race. Peter Hills was having a lonely race in 5th place maintain a consistent pace. At front Barlow was continuously pulling away from the new 2nd position car of N Kelly, A Kenny had been relegated to third on the road.

Chris Perini, Rowen Ross and Darren Kurzok entertaining onlookers with their brilliant mid Pack battle, throughout the duration of the race these 3 cars were hardly ever apart culminatng with a strong 6th place for Perini. At the end Barlow finished 1st from N Kelly 2nd and A Kenny 3rd. Smith arrived home 4th and Hills 5th. Dick again won class 4 finishing in 14th position.

This time it was N Kelly’s turn to make a brilliant start in race 3, the cars arrived at the second turn and the order was N Kelly from Barlow and A Kenny, Smith and Sutton. As the mid field was in the middle of turn two Kurzok found himself facing the wrong way stationary on the racing line and Neilson also stationary just beside him. Neilson was able to engage 1st gear and get going but unfortunately Kurzok could not get going. The organizers had no choice but to bring out the safety car to control the field.

It took 2 laps to clear the stricken car and resume racing again. Barlow made the most of the restart and was followed by N Kelly and A Kenny. The battle for 4th was just as intense with Sutton, Smith and Hills looking for racing room. The 3 leaders remained in the same position on the track however by mid race they had strung out. 4th position was a different matter Smith was 4th just after the restart, Sutton took over on the 4th lap and it was Hills turn on the 6th lap and finally Smith reclaimed 4th again. The final result was Barlow 1st, N Kelly 2nd, A Kenny 3th and Smith 4th. Dick took a clean sweep of wins in Class 4. Barlow maintained his lead in the championship with 2 wins and a strong 2nd.
