Glorious autumn conditions greeted he competitors for the Supersports NSW State championship at Sydney Motorsport Park. The early morning temperatures where relatively cool, but is soon warmed to low twenty’s by midday. For this round of the championship the longer Brabham track was used, a combination of the old fast circuit and the newer more technical addition.

A solid field of Seventeen cars came out to qualify, a mixture of Radicals, Stohr, Chiron and a bunch of PRB’s, including Jack Crampton making his motor racing debut in a Radical. Darren Barlow in his Stohr claimed pole with a lap time of 1:49.3024, a whole 3 second faster than Oliver Smith in the Radical SR3RSX. Alex Kenny was 3rd fastest in the Chiron while Rowan Ross was 4th. James Dick was the fastest in class 4 (PRB) claiming 10th on the grid.

Alex Kenny made the better start in race 1 to take the lead in the early running of the race. As the field came through the new tight section Peter Hills in his radical spun and lost plenty of time relegating him to last position. Barlow’s speed was evident, he did not waste much time and overtook Alex Kenny to claim the lead. Once Barlow had some clear air he pulled away from the rest of the pack; his Stohr in race trim was lapping 3 seconds faster than second positioned car of Alex Kenny .

The PRB’s where dicing in close quarters with James Dick and John Moyes the leaders amongst this class. In the end Barlow won by a healthy margin of 34 seconds, 2nd place went to Alex Kenny and 3rd was Oliver Smith. John Moyes won class 4 finishing in 10th place.

The second race had a similar pattern to the first, Barlow took an early lead from the rolling start and was never headed, as the laps passed he pulled away from second place at ease. Oliver Smith was also having a lonely race in 2nd place, meanwhile the battle for third was the opposite. Rowen Ross, Alex Kenny, Peter Hills and Neil Kenny where dicing for the last spot on the podium.

Moyes was punching above his weight in the small PRB running just behind some more fancied bigger class cars. David Crampton and Alex Kenny both received a 5 second penalty for breaching track limits, this penalty would affect their finishing position at the end.  The final result was Barlow 1st, Smith 2nd and Ross 3rd.

Race 3 was held in cloudy conditions on Sunday afternoon, Barlow continued his form by making a great getaway and was closely followed by Alex Kenny and Smith. On the 2nd lap Smith overtook Alex Kenny while Ross and Neil Kenny battled for 4th position. In the PRB (class 4) Ivan Srejber was having a vigorous skirmish with James Dick and Jos Kroon for 8th outright.

As the cars came around for the third lap; David Crampton had a spin at the very fast turn 1, Brad Neilson was following in close quarter and unfortunately T boned Crampton’s car sending both cars in the outfield. As the cars speared off the track there was pieces of bodywork flying in the air. It was a fairly big incident and Crampton was very fortunate that the impact was not on the driver’s side of the car. Once the dust settled it was good to see Neilson get out of the car and walk to Crampton to make sure he was fine.

This obviously caused the safety car to come out to control the race and that is how it ended. Barlow finished first again making it a clean sweep, the consistent Smith came home 2nd while Alex Kenny was 3rd. A clean sweep by Barlow showed his dominance during the meet and most importantly a bag full of points towards the championship.
