CAMS NSW 2015 Motor Race Championship

SuperSports Round 3

Wakefield Park , 20th June 2015

A good field of cars was assembled for the 3rd round of the NSW State Championships, 17 cars to be exact.  Class One cars consisted of ; Garth Walden , Oliver Smith, Peter Paddon , Kim Burke , Greg Smith , Brad Shiels , Aaron Lewis , Tony Haggerty , Chris Sutton and  David Crompton.  Class 2; Darren Barlow. Finally in class 3 the Radical SR8’s of Neale Muston, Tim Berryman, Robert Baird, Chris Medland and John Corbett, plus the Chiron of Neil Kenny

The cars came out to qualify in very cold conditions, the temperature at 9 am in at the track was a balmy 1 deg Celsius, compared to the overnight -3. The expectation was that the cars would struggle warming their tyres but it was not evident, with all competitors keeping on the black stuff and setting good times. Darren Barlow in the Stohr claimed pole with a time of 58.4639 and alongside him was Muston in the Radical SR8. The fastest SR3 ( Class 1) was  Garth Walden in 3rd grid position.  Again the format had not changed with all 3 races to be held in one day and a rolling start to commence proceedings.

Race 1

After two warm up laps the cars crossed the start line and accelerated towards the first turn jostling for positions. The smaller engine Stohr of Barlow was out gunned by the SR8’s that surrounded him. Muston who was  on the front row lead into turn one.  At turn 3 at the top of the hill, the order was Muston, Berryman, Baird then Barlow in 4th position who now had it all in front of him. Muston trying to get a gap over Berryman spun at the fish hook first time around relegating him to further back in the field. As the cars crossed the start finish line for the first time the order was; Berryman, Baird, Barlow, Walden and O Smith. These six cars had a small gap to the rest of the field. Barlow’s nimble Stohr used the tight back section of the track to his advantage to overtake Baird to claim 2nd position. Barlow then set out after Berryman and the lead of the race.

Racing was not just about the leaders, a great midpack battle formed between Paddon, Burke and O Smith. These three cars were only separated by a few seconds throughout the entire race, with Baird joining them towards the end of the race. Muston also was making a comeback through the field overtaking cars at will; all his efforts rewarded him with a good 4th place at the end.  At the Front Berryman had a commanding lead from Barlow who subsequently had a sizable gap to third positioned Walden.  Walden was trying to keep the fast charging Corbett behind; and by lap 7 Corbett was through. The final order was Berryman nine seconds clear of Barlow who also was the same gap clear of 3rd place finisher Corbett. It was a very entertaining 1st race of the meet with all cars finishing.

Race 2

The start of the second race was similar to the first; Barlow in the Stohr lost positions to the more powerful SR8 in the race to turn 1. Muston who had made a better start compared to the first race was amongst the leading pack. As the cars came down the hill towards turn 5 it started getting messy. Muston, Walden and Paddon had an altercation causing Muston to spin in the middle of the turn. The rest of the field did their best to drive around the accident. This altercation shuffled the field and the order by the end of the first laps was Berryman, Barlow and Corbett.  Fasters drivers  like Muston was in 13th and Walden 16th and a long way behind, this was the second race in a row where Muston found himself at the back, facing a large number of cars in front of him.

As the race settled it soon became a Berryman master class, he was lapping in the low 57’s and increasing the gap from Barlow who was also in the low 57s.. These two drivers pulled away from the rest of the field with Berryman finishing a whole 25 seconds clear from the 4th placed finisher.

Muston drove another good race after his initial mishap finishing a strong 6th. Paddon was the first SR3 home in 4th position. Walden unfortunately retired on lap 8 making him the only retirement of the round. The final order was Berryman from Barlow while Corbett finished a strong 3rd. This race seemed to be rather messy compared with the first one, there were small off by many drivers.

Race 3 (Trophy Race)

Like the previous round (Sydney Motorsport Park) the third and final race was held in very dark and cold conditions, so cold that Kim Burke spun in the warm up lap trying to get warmth into the tyres.  An incident in the previous races (other classes) had caused a delay in proceedings.  The darker and colder conditions did not alter the fact that Barlow’s Stohr again struggled off the line compared to the more powerful SR8’s.  Berryman and Corbett led proceedings into turn 1 closely followed by Barlow. In the jostling that occurs in the initial few laps Haggerty had a spin at turn five while Paddon had a little off as well. The track was losing its temperature and drivers were struggling.

At front  Berryman was in full control leading from Corbett and Barlow, this time though Muston was just behind them and he started his charge overtaking both Barlow and Corbett and settling into 2nd position. The track temperature caught out more drivers, Corbett who had a great day’s racing till now spun relegating him to 5th while Oliver smith also spun loosing valuable places. The final order was Berryman winning 3 races from 3 starts. Muston showed his speed claiming 2nd place and recovering from the first 2 races. Barlow finished 3rd making a trio of podium finishes and plenty of championship points.

Most drivers in the field probably never experienced racing in such cold conditions. Considering the temperature and the amount for cars they handled themselves well . Great racing by all concerned..
