CAMS NSW SuperSports Championship – Round 5

Sydney Motorsport Park – October 25th 2014

2014 R5 Race1

The final round of the NSW Supersport championship was held at a very hot Sydney Motorsport Park. Coming into the meet there were four drivers still vying for the outright NSW title? Radical drivers Greg Smith, Joshua Conroy, Rowan Ross and Stohr driver Darren Barlow. In qualifying Greg Smith showed the way setting a time of 1:26.6231 to claim pole, alongside him on the front row was Barlow. Both drivers where a whole 3 seconds faster than the rest of the field and this fact eventually showed during the upcoming races.

Race 1 got on the way with a rolling start (a feature that will be part of the 2015 NSW Title) and Greg Smith immediately started pulling away from Barlow and Peter Paddon. The speed of the first two was evident, both pulling away with ease from the rest of the field. By the 3rd lap Greg Smith had a commanding lead from Barlow who subsequently was comfortably ahead of Peter Paddon. The dice of the race was between Aaron Lewis, Rowan Ross, Joshua Conroy and Oliver Smith, these four drivers were only separated by a few seconds though out the race. Oliver Smith was the leader of this dice with the other 3 nipping at his heels; turn two became a game of who could brake the latest. One interesting entry was the Victorian driver Andrew Richmond in his Radical SR3. The entry was called Fire and Ice racing and the great livery depicted this, one side blue and the other side orange/red. Up front the fast Greg Smith took the checkered flag 2 seconds ahead of Barlow. 3rd place went to Paddon (1st in Class One). The class One results were Paddon from O Smith and Conroy.

2014 R5 race2 GSRace 2 started in a similar fashion to the first one, Greg Smith lead the charge into turn 2 and was never headed. He was consistently lapping faster than his rivals and with the clear road ahead of him he could control the pace with little interference. Barlow again was his main contender, both drivers drove a relatively lonely race. However the battle for the SR3 was an intense affair; Paddon, Burke, Conroy, Ross, Lewis and Oliver Smith all drove a spirited race and for most of it they were separated by a few seconds. By lap 3 the two leaders had a healthy gap on Paddon who was just ahead of O Smith and Burke, the latter was applying plenty of pressure to O Smith and eventually passed him to claim 4th position. At race end 11 of the 12 starters finished  and the order was G Smith 1st in the Radical SR8, Barlow 2nd in the Stohr and Paddon 3rd in the SR3 ( 1st in class One). Class One final results where; Paddon from Burke & Conroy (3rd, 4th and 5th Overall).  The unfortunate DNF was SuperSports Club President George Davis who sadly suffered a gearbox malaise in his final race of his long career. He had announced his retirement earlier that day, but then suffered his first DNF of the season.

Race 3 was held late Saturday afternoon, the temperature had not eased but the wind had picked up making the conditions slightly more pleasant. As per the previous two races, Greg Smith and Barlow made a great start and edged away from the rest of the field. This time Barlow was able to hang onto the back of G Smith’s tail for most of the race. Both drivers were lapping similar times and comfortably pulling away from the rest of the SR3. The battle for class One (SR3) was as intense as ever; Burke, Paddon & Lewis made the early running. Just behind them Brad Sheils was having a great dice with Rod salmon until Sheils rear tires started going off in the warm conditions. Probably the drive of the day went to Rowan Ross who made a bad start and found himself down in 9th position by the end of lap 1. He made his way through the field to finish in solid 5th place overall. This drive also contributed to Rowan winning the outright NSW Supersport 2014 Championship and also the Class one Outright Championships. Greg Smith finished the race in 1st place netting him a clean sweep of wins for the round. Darren Barlow again finished 2nd for the third time in a row and Burke was the best of the SR3 finishing 3rd (1st in Class One).
